The Leica Has Landed

February 25, 2005

The new camera has arrived with, as Dean put it, “fanfare and doves taking off and shit.” Now I take on the laborious task of waiting for the batteries to charge whilst I ogle my new gadget, desperate for something to photograph.

Update: Well I took her out for a test drive, and like what I see so far. I’m still learning the buttons, dials, and whirlygigs but so far, so good. Here’s a few shots of the new toy.

Why You Shouldn’t Google Yourself

February 25, 2005

Despite the fun I’ve had learning about other Matt Thomases in the world, every now and then the results are just plain frightening. The amount of time I spent trying to decide whether that was a doll or just a very small, scary baby is ridiculous. Staff of Timberview Christian Fellowship, you creep me out.

Traveling Leica

February 25, 2005

My object of lust for the past year has finally been purchased and is on its way to me. Somehow, the anticipation after ordering the thing is about a thousand times higher than it was when I was waiting to place the order.

A big, bad kudos to Tony Rose at POPflash for not only having the best prices, but also for having shipped out the camera an hour after I placed my order. From clicking “submit” to receiving the camera is going to be less than 24 hours, and I am extremely impressed.

So, back to the anticipation thing. Now I’m clicking furiously, unable to sleep, reloading the FedEx tracking page every 15 minutes to see where my camera is. I am worse than a ten-year-old on Christmas. This is fun.

Anybody ever been to Baltimore?

February 24, 2005

What was a job opening applied for on a hunch has become the need for a quick trip to Baltimore. I’ve never been there—I’ve never even been halfway there—so if anybody’s familiar with traveling the southeast I’d love some suggestions. Lemme hear your suggestions for where to stay while I’m in town and anything I’ll need to know about getting around.

P.S. I don’t know anybody there, do I?

One Year and Counting

February 22, 2005

Well, I missed my own anniversary over the weekend. On February 19th, 2004, I made my first post with Textpattern, beginning a journey that has taken me on a whole new direction in life. I’ve learned a lot in the past year, and hopefully my work shows it.

Now, I think it’s time to get a real job.

Wow, well, it’s a hell of a way to go. The last article: Shotgun Golf with Bill Murray.

Time for an Update

February 21, 2005

Textpattern (smallcaps)RC3 is out today, so I’m about to get on it. Parts of the site may be non-fuctional, differently-functional or hyper-functional while I perform the update. I’ll post here again when all is well.

Here we go!

Update 2 Rockin. With the release of rss_suparchive 0.9, I’m humming right along again. Textpattern is awesome.

Update The installation went well, but there are a few bugs showing up on the Journal and Reviews pages. They’ll be fixed soon enough.

Now I’ll open it up questions from the press.

Born-Again TV Stars

February 21, 2005

Boston Legal is the place where forgotten actors go to be reborn. And the acting is actually good, but the writing has to be some of the best on network TV. It is funny without relying on gags; it is dramatic and sometimes sad but always compelling.

Witness William Shatner, Candace Bergen, and Betty White’s turns on the show. All three are doing some of the best work of their lives. Where Betty White was annoying on The Golden Girls, Shatner was just weird on Star Trek, and Bergen was sometimes funny but often too self-important on Murphy Brown; on Boston Legal all three are pee-your-pants-funny on a weekly basis.

If you’re wondering what spurred this outburst, it was Betty White’s line in tonight’s episode, while prosetylizing to a serial killer:

”...if you are out there murdering people, on some level, you must want to be Christian. Would you let me take you to church?”

Wherein I Avoid Saying “Nice Package”

February 19, 2005

Last week in a few editions of Apple’s eNews mass-mailing, they included a product shot of Mac OS X Tiger. Apple’s package design has been getting increasingly better as of late (despite a few steps back), and this is really nice. I knew that, despite my newfound life as a mostly-programmer, I was still a graphic design nerd at heart when I realized that my favorite feature of Tiger was how it’s going to look on the shelves at the Apple Store.
