Growing Point

February 23, 2006

Silverpoint continues to grow by leaps and bounds, and as such, we’re looking for an Interactive Designer to join the team here in our Baltimore office.

Our ideal candidate is an experienced Flash designer, fluent in ActionScript, with an eye for design and a creative touch. We don’t build sites with Flash, we make it an integral part of our larger standards-driven implementation. You’ll do everything from virtual tours to slideshows to unique, immersive, interactive experiences.

The full scoop, and information on how to apply, is available at the job description on Silverpoint’s site.

Thanks a lot, AppleCare

February 18, 2006

It seems a missing 512mb stick of RAM was the least of my troubles when I got my PowerBook back from AppleCare.

And they’re off!

February 17, 2006

A new round of Silverpoint sites have hit the ground running, so I thought I’d let everyone see what I’ve been spending my time on recently.

The site for Presidential Classroom is one I’m particularly proud of. With Landon Durnan producing, Silverpoint created true gestalt as our small changes (a new front page and new graphics for existing inside pages) amounted to an entirely new aesthetic for the organization. PC was particularly near-and-dear to my heart as an ardent fan of the West Wing, being particularly thrilled that a site I designed is linked to on the West Wing Episode Guide.

Fellow Silverpoint designer Phoebe Barger and myself designed the site for the National Presbyterian School. With Tom Schisler as the producer, we created one of Silverpoint’s most advanced implementations under-the-hood yet. A great existing identity system helped guide the way in designing this complex, yet simply-designed site.

St. Mary’s was a great school to design for, with amazing resources at our disposal. The site, designed by Dave Bedingfield and myself, and produced by Clint Sommer, is a great fit for this well-respected girls school in Memphis, Tennessee.

And a blast from the past—despite launching several months ago, I never mentioned Porter-Gaud, a site I designed along with Dave Bedingfield. The site, produced by Corbin Bentley, was the first of my work at Silverpoint to launch since beginning my career with them in April 2005. It’s a great, amazingly comprehensive site, with a design that belies the complexity underneath. Maybe the most fun though was knowing I was designing for Stephen Colbert’s alma mater, as well as because they’re in Charleston, it allowed me several months of reminiscing about my time spent in the lowcountry.

So what am I up to now? We’re incredibly busy with a host of school projects, plus one secret item that’ll hopefully be coming to an RSS feed near you soon. Stay tuned.

Mixed Feelings

February 16, 2006

Update: Well, despite my other problems, there is a bright spot—Apple is sending me a new 512mb stick of RAM to replace the one they lost.

Good: Today I received my PowerBook, which I sent away for service on Monday. The issue for which it was sent off appears to have been fixed, and in the process, they replaced the top case module assembly which was marred by pitting aluminum (mine was twice as bad as that guy’s).

Bad: While the new top case assembly looks great, the button on the trackpad requires a lot more force to depress than my old one, which is really taking some getting used to.

Ugly: After booting up, I noticed that the ‘Book seemed to be running slow. That’s partially because in the process of having it repaired, a 512mb stick of memory was either lost or stolen. I’m now waiting “one to two business days” to hear back from Apple as they look for the chip. What happens when they inevitably don’t find it, I don’t yet know. The most likely scenario: I cough up $70 for a new chip while cursing AppleCare under my breath.

My Valentine’s Day Thought

February 14, 2006

The only thing I dislike more than people who go overboard for Valentine’s day are the people who think they’re above it. That is, the people who make a great showing of not “believing in” Valentine’s day, as though a superficial holiday dreamed up to just spend money and be nice to people were something that anyone should spend much time debating about one way or the other.

Shut up, buy your mom some flowers, and step in line with the rest of humanity. You want to eat chocolate, and today is just as good a day as any.

That was actually kind of enjoyable.

Metro

February 2, 2006

Breakfast is served at 5 am. It usually consists of a piece of baloney and cheese with two slices of bread, or a hot dog. He doesn’t eat on hot dog days. After breakfast, he is sent back to bed until 8 am.

He is allowed to shave once a week.

He is provided with nothing beside a shirt, slippers, and a pair of pants. He must buy everything else at the prison store. He has not yet been allowed to go, so he has no underwear, no toothbrush, and no socks.

He wore the same pants without washing for two weeks. When laundry was serviced, he had to turn over the only clothes he had, so he sat naked in his cell until his clothes were returned. He laid under a sheet to stay warm. Later, a fellow inmate loaned him a sweat shirt.

When his clothes were returned, they were still wet, but he put them on because they were warmer than the outside air.

He wasn’t allowed to bring his medicine in with him, so his blood pressure skyrocketed until he was allowed to see the nurse.

He has lost 24 pounds.

His suffering brings me no joy. It heals no wounds. It makes no amends. It keeps no one safe. It makes no one happy. It helps no one. It solves nothing.

This is what happens before you’re found guilty.
