Dreaming of a #fff Christmas
December 7, 2005
While the snow in Baltimore over the past few days has been a fun anomaly for me, I’m satisfied now and don’t mind if we don’t get snow again for a month or so. No dice, though, because now it looks like we’re getting it again this week, probably more than last time.
I can see how this gets old.
I find myself a bit paranoid though that it’s going to snow in the days before Christmas. I only get a little bit of time off for the holidays, and if I’m sitting in BWI dealing with a cancelled flight on the day before Christmas Eve, the Deparment of Homeland Security is going to have to come haul me away.
So, to the locals: does it often snow around Christmas? And how hard does it have to be coming down for flights to start being cancelled at BWI? I’m flying Southwest to Birmingham, Alabama, so unless the gods are really conspiring against me, there’s not going to be a problem at the other end.

To be honest, it occasionally snows around Christmas, but not so much as to shut down the airports. Our big snows are traditionally between the middle of January and the middle of February.
I spent the first 21 years of my life in areas that had very distorted seasons: the U.P. had snow from September to May one year. Maryland may take some getting used to for a southern boy like you, but it is nice having about 3 months of winter, spring, summer and fall.
Baltimore gets an average of 12 inches a year: enough to get some pretty pictures, but not enough to justify owning a snowblower.
Actually, Central Maryland has not had a white Christmas in quite some time. About two Christmas ago it snowed, but it was not a significant snowfall. I believe it was only 2 inches, and more ice than snow. Living around here that will be the biggest problem—ice. The only time snowfall is significant is when the storm comes up from the south. A traditional Nor’easter will smack us around, too.
That said, if you are leaving right around Christmas, you should not encounter any weather problems. Your biggest problem might be your destination. The weather yahoos in these parts always mention that we have not had a “white Christmas” in quite some time in Baltimore.
Nice use of the hex code for white, btw.
Be a man for once and quit whining. Snow brings pain to our lives, and through that pain we are purified. It comes and blots out the pain and the misery and the ugliness, and replaces it with the purity of white. Thank goodness for the snow to cover up the scum on the sidewalk…we shold be so lucky as to be snowed in for Christmas.
I have been in Baltimore five years and in that time I think we had only one big snowfall before Christmas. We usually enter the ice age on January 1 and then it snows and snows until March. Makes me long for the ‘warm’ winters of england.
Greetings from New York! We’ve only experience one half-day of constant snowing. We’re expecting on tonight as well. Hasn’t ruined my plans yet.
I used to live in Arlington, VA and was always able to escape for Christmas through BWI. They’re equipped to handle any reasonable snowfall. Good luck!
