nano
September 13, 2005

So, it’s here, and I pretty much love it. It’s the tiniest thing ever. It’s actually thinner than the iPod shuffle. And since I don’t have a great track record when it comes to hanging on to small music devices, it’s engraved with the address of this here web site. Here’s hoping when if when I lose this one, it’ll wind up in honest hands.
All in all, it’s perfect in every way, except, of course, the lack of FireWire. I’ve got a USB 2.0 cardbus card coming tomorrow, so I’ll get to use that empty slot with the button that’s fun to click when I’m nervous and speed up my transfer speeds simultaneously.
Update: For reasons that really only become apparent once you’ve got the headphones in your ears, despite the fact that some people have complained about it, it really makes a lot of sense to put the audio out jack on the bottom.

How is the weight of that thing? Does the lightweight affect the way you press and spin your finger around wheel? I am curious because seems like Apple did not change the size of the front interface in proportion to the iPod nano’s size.
Congrats on your recent Nano purchase. I have to admit that I would love one of those babies but I’m still enjoying my 30GB iPod Photo.
Mine just arrived today, too. It’s fantastic! Even though I used to have a first-generation iPod, once I got the Shuffle I was happy. I thought that was all I needed.
The screen! Oh, the beautiful, gorgeous screen! I’ve never been this impressed with an Apple product.
The weight is probably about the same as two iPod shuffles. Or iPods shuffle. I’m not sure how to pluralize that. It’s not nearly as heavy as an iPod dock.
Despite how crazy small it is, it’s still just as easy to navigate the click wheel. I thought at first it might be awkward, since the wheel is a lot smaller, and there’s not as much to grasp while you use it, but it’s really not an issue. You can tell a lot of thought went into exactly where to locate the wheel and how to balance the components so that it’s not top- or bottom-heavy.
I had the original 5 gigger, then a 3g, then a 4g that was stolen, then I used my mom’s 4gb mini, then I bought a shuffle. I’ve pretty much owned them all at one point or another. The nano is, far and away, my favorite—even though I’m still a little irritated about the FireWire thing.
Nate mentioned the screen… the screen is unlike anything I’ve seen before. It’s so crisp and clear and sharp; much sharper than the screen on my RAZR.
sounds great, i have to get one :D
Does it allow you to randomly autofill like the shuffle does?
Tell us more about why the earphones are better at the bottom. If ever this will be my first iPod.. ever (well, my cousin gave me his 1st gen iPod which lasted me about a week until the batteries died). I wanna know more. :)
Did the apple store do the name engraving for you or did you have that done elsewhere? It’s a nice touch. I’d like to see some more pictures of it as well :)
Oh yes, the nano does look rather fantastic. I would certainly be getting one, except for the fact that I have 10+ gigs of music, and I just bought a color screen 20 gig iPod.
Yeah the design of the nano is just incredible. Too bad it only holds 1,000 songs because I hate to take music Off of the player to add new songs.
The nano and the Shuffle? Really, is that necessary?
Now who said it was “necessary?” :)
