Ninety percent of Mobile county residents want mandatory drug testing for public school students. And half want to give drug tests to elementary school children. More and more, I’m doubting whether I can tolerate living in Mobile in the long run.

“But, [Mobile County schools Superintendent Harold Dodge] said, there are several obstacles that the system would face, including cost, student privacy issues and other legal questions.”

    Obstacles, huh?

    Did they “poll” the students?

Some quotes from the article, I find interesting:

    • “Statistics show that where drug testing is involved, children use less drugs,” Taylor added. “The use of less drugs over time will change our culture and behavior patterns for all human beings.”
    • The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that public schools can test students who are involved in extracurricular activities, which is what Baldwin County does.
    • “It gives the kids an out,” Romano said. “They can say, ‘I don’t want to do that. I don’t want to get caught or I won’t get to play baseball.’”
    • “You cannot stop them from doing drugs unless you catch them,” Romano said. “If you don’t catch them, it gets worse.”

Yeah, you know, a few obstacles—like the pesky constitution, and the school system’s stated mission of a “free and appropriate education” to every student.

Have your say
