Now this is what I’m talkin’ bout.
March 19, 2004
Found in the Savannah Morning News today, the Savannah City Council has issued a resolution noting its opposition to SR595, the bill currently before the Georgia House of Reps seeking to add a constitutional amendment to the Georgia Constitution barring gay marriage.
I wrote Burke Day (R-Tybee Island), my local representative about this issue a few weeks ago. When I proposed that Mr. Day might be out of touch with the sentiments of his constituents, he replied “Finally, I resent the dickens of your remark inferring I’ve been ‘spending too much time up there in Atlanta.’ I make it a point to make the rounds in the district I try to represent, so I’ll defy your attempt to suggest I’m out of touch.” Mr. Day, I hope this serves to you as an example of what true leadership and responsibility to your constituents entails.
With this, Savannah affirms its responsibility as a supporter of civil rights, as evidenced by its central role in the Civil Rights movements not long ago.
I’m proud of the city council, and they should all be commended for standing up for what’s right. The text of the resolution is below:
WHEREAS, the City of Savannah has a rich history in the civil rights movement and rightfully considers itself a progressive city regarding its policies ensuring equal rights for all citizens; and
WHEREAS, the City recognizes the status and rights of all persons regardless of race, color, creed, religion, sex, marital status, parental status, familial status, sexual orientation, national origin, gender identity, and age.
Now, therefore, be it hereby resolved by the Council of the City of Savannah:
Section 1: the City of Savannah opposes Senate Bill SR595 which amends the State of Georgia Constitution to ban same-sex marriages in the state of Georgia.
Section 2: the Clerk of Council is hereby directed to forward a copy of this resolution to the Governor, Lieutenant Governor and all members of the 2004 Georgia General Assembly.
