Republican Rock
August 26, 2004
Having grown up in the church and having once been really involved in youth ministry, I got pretty well acquainted with the work of christian musicians, particularly those whose music we would sing at LifeTeen mass from time to time. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised since I was a republican at the time I was listening to that music, but it was nonetheless disheartening to hear that the GOP is bringing in some pretty vocal anti-gay performers for the “entertainment” of their delegates.
What else can you say about Donnie McClurkin? This is the guy who, referring to gays in a piece at the 700 Club web site, said “I’m not in the mood to play with those who are trying to kill our children.” Yet he is in the mood for attempting to start his own ex-gay ministry. Later in the article he says that “if the churches can get together and unite, then Christians can have a major voice against the homosexual agenda.”
McClurkin’s biggest problem is that he’s misidentified his confusion about his own sexuality with actual homosexuality. Being gay isn’t about being abused as a child or having sex with men. Being gay is a part of who a person is, an unchangeable characteristic as un-choosable as being straight. It’s sad that McClurkin’s own bad experiences as a child now make him think that he is capable of, even called to, “convert” gays and lesbians to heterosexuality.
I really don’t know how to argue with someone like Donnie McClurkin, because his beliefs are based on fear, a distrust and hatred of homosexuality that stems from his abuse as a child. But Keith Boykin gets it right. He says “Donnie McClurkin, of all people, should know better. He suffered for nearly 20 years because society told him there was something wrong with him for his homosexual desires. And he believed it. Now, rather than teaching young people to love themselves for who they are, McClurkin teaches them that they are sinful and evil if they are gay.” Read his article on McClurkin for a level-headed look into this anti-gay crusader that’s been singled out as an exemplar by the republican party.

I’m definitely in agreement with you about Donnie Mc…I discussed the same things on my own blog about Donnie’s doctrine of fear and intolerance…it is particularly shameful…this is what i said on my blog:
as for Donnie…i have MANY problems with dude…i’ve heard his diatribes on more than one occassion and now it’s just sickening…from the fact (yeah) that dude still does what he wants to do with men when he wants to do it to his illogical understanding of the “spirit” of homosexuality…dude is really just self-hating and loathing…
think about this…donnie preaches that he’s been “delivered” from homosexuality…like a friend of mine said – he’s as delivered from homosexuality as i am from buying shoes…i buy shoes when i want to buy shoes…but in between purchases, i don’t need them so i’m not a “shoe buyer”...same thing with donnie…
same thing with most of these “delivered” people that have no understanding of biblical truth…so in order to “prove” he’s been delivered, he’s fathered a child “out of wedlock” with some woman in LA…did they get married? naw…it was to prove that dude has sexual drive with and for women…BULLSH*T…
and i ain’t even touchin’ the RNC portion…how in THE hell?? WHAT in THE hell? dude is confused…wants love, etc…
I just so happen to come across this and while reading it I was saddened. I pray for you, I pray that you want to know who God is and what the spirit realm is. God notes in His Word, “My people perish for lack of knowledge.” But what can you do but pray. If you feel that what Mr. McClurkin says is wrong, then pray for him. But if you just have an opinion about it, keep it to yourself. What good does it do to criticize someone elses faith instead of finding your own? Wow. I wonder where you will be when Jesus comes back for his people. Are you one of His people? I guess that is the real question. His children know Him and hear His voice. Whose voice are you hearing? The bible tells it all, if you don’t know, maybe you should find out before voicing your opinion on everyone else. Again, I pray for you. I pray the God unharden your heart and deliver your mind. The devil seems to have a hold of it. When that happens, anything/anyone that is for Christ, that person, the devil, is against.
Amplified:
Hosea 4
6My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you [the priestly nation] have rejected knowledge, I will also reject you that you shall be no priest to Me; seeing you have forgotten the law of your God, I will also forget your children.
/
1 Corinthians 15
34Awake [[1] from your drunken stupor and return] to sober sense and your right minds, and sin no more. For some of you have not the knowledge of God [you are utterly and willfully and disgracefully ignorant, and continue to be so, lacking the sense of God’s presence and all true knowledge of Him]. I say this to your shame.
/
1 Corinthians 6
9Do you not know that the unrighteous and the wrongdoers will not inherit or have any share in the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived (misled): neither the impure and immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor those who participate in homosexuality, 10Nor cheats (swindlers and thieves), nor greedy graspers, nor drunkards, nor foulmouthed revilers and slanderers, nor extortioners and robbers will inherit or have any share in the kingdom of God.
/
Psalm 35
3Draw out also the spear and javelin and close up the way of those who pursue and persecute me. Say to me, I am your deliverance!
//
So, if the devil can possess a persons body and God delivers that person, why is that you feel that God can’t deliver someone from anyother evil spirit? The devil is a spirit, but there were also spirits that fell w/ him that can invade a persons body and mind.
God is all power and all knowing, there is nothing too hard for Him.
/
Jeremiah 32
27Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh; is there anything too hard for Me?
/
May God bless and keep you, in Jesus Name.
Shaie, you might not have been paying attention.
I didn’t question McClurkin’s faith. It is, like your own, a matter of personal preference and I don’t begrudge him, you, or anyone the right to be as Christian, Jewish, or Raelian as they want.
Where I depart from Mr. McClurkin’s thought process is when he decided it was a good idea to try to convert gays to a life of heterosexuality. It’s as ridiculous an idea as trying to convert a Baptist to a life of Satan-worshipping.
At any rate, this isn’t about McClurkin’s faith, my faith, your faith, or faith at all. It’s about things much more tangible and provable than that. It’s about the fact, not the belief, that Donnie McClurkin is making it harder, not easier, for gays to live their lives normally and without discrimination. This isn’t an issue of special treatment; this is just about letting gay people get by without making their lives any more difficult.
I appreciate you sharing your thoughts with me, but I’ll have to disagree with you that I should keep my opinion to myself. After all, one could say the same to you. So as long as you feel compelled to quote scripture to total strangers, you should recognize their right to express their divergent opinion.
I agree with matt, platonic love can exist between two grown men.
I would just like to say that the words of ‘Shaie’ are of no relevance to what Matt was talking about. How dare she come in here and basically accuse him of being a devil worshipper/sinner for speaking his mind against someone who is openly full of hate and self loathing? This is the side of religion that I hate, fundamentalist loonies – which is also why I could never vote Republican because that is all they consist of, that and gun loving war mongers. UGH.
I have to agree w/ Shaie. She is just pointing out that homasexuality is wrong in Gods eyes. Basically pointing out a basic fact of the bible. She did not call anyone out or degrade anyone. I think everyone is responisble for their actions. I relate being homosexual to the same thing as being a pedople, or an adulterer. Do people choose to be a pedophile, or an adulterer?... Or is it ingrained. I think its choice. Everyone is different. And everyone has different temptations. Homosexuality is a temptation that must be overcome also. I have gay friends. And they have NEVER shown me in the bible that being a homosexual is acceptable in Gods eyes. This is all Donnie McClurkin is saying. He believes its a choice. Like you believe its natural. You cant prove him wrong scientifcally. But he can prove you wrong through the Bible.
When you can prove to me that the admonishments against being gay are more relevant than the many other things the old testament suggests … you know, like selling your children into slavery and abstaining from pork … then I’ll listen to a biblical argument. As long as your children are free and you’re eating barbeque, don’t tell me that the bible says being gay is a sin.
I’m not even offended by your comparison of being gay to pedophilia because it’s so laughable. Consensual gay sex is in no way comparable to non-consensual sex with a child. To equate the two is to expose yourself as someone whose position on homosexuality is grounded exclusively in illogical distrust and bigotry.
This is one of the dumbest, but also the funniest, things anyone has ever posted here.
I watched a BET documentary about Mr. McClurkin today and I broke down and cried. His experience is my own. Before hearing his story, I felt shame and guilt for what my uncles did to me. I appreciate McClurkin for sharing what so many of us tend to cover up.
As for the issue of gay-bashing, I didn’t get that in the documentary. He said he wasn’t trying to change homosexuals, but that he wanted to offer a way out to those who for whatever reason, wanted a way out. That doesn’t seem so offensive, at least not to me. Let me know what you all think. Peace. Browngirl
I pray for you and can only believe that God will open your eyes to the “whole” truth in the scriptures. If you are TRUELY “in Christ” then you will know that homosexuality is wrong in the eyes of God. God still loves you, but He doesn’t have to tolerate it. He says He will forgive IF we turn from our sin. How can He forgive if we just “ask” for forgiveness and don’t turn from it. “if my people, who are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14 Also… Leviticus 20:13 says– “If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.†God put Adam and Eve in the Garden not Adam and Steve. He created “man” and “woman” so they could replentish the earth, how can 2 men or 2 women do that?! They can’t, it’s not natural! Donnie McClurkin is a man of God who is trying to reach our lost and dying world! Thank you Donnie, for not being afraid to do the work of the Lord!!!
I never claimed to be “in Christ;” as a matter of fact, I feel fairly confident that I am not in Mickey Mouse, the Tooth Fairy, or any other make-believe characters, either.
And I wouldn’t call the Bible historically factual, nor the least bit scientific. Who’s up argument shit creek now?
What’s the argument about. If it’s based on the bible. Sex out of wedlock is wrong (heterosexual, homosexual, bestiality, adultery, pedophilia, fornication). Sex and bible don’t mix. People are not born choosing with affinity for sexual towards a gender. They learn that. Is bestiality a birth trait? But some people do it. In the end, we will all find out the truth!
Thank you Lee, for reminding us all that when you’ve got no other point to make, one should just compare gays to horse-fuckers and call it a night.
