Stop Playing Baseball

September 30, 2005

It’s no secret that I’ve never been much of a sports fan, but for the right sport I have been known to get into the spirit of the games and become a fan. Ok, in my past experience, the “right sport” has only been college football, the Olympics, and the occasional World Cup, but it’s not like I’m entirely anti-sports.

One sport that I have never particularly cared for is baseball, and despite my initial curiosity with the sport and the fact that I was charmed by the ephemera surrounding the beginning of baseball season in April, I am growing extremely tired of the sport. I’ve never lived in, or anywhere near, a “baseball town,” so the logistics of baseball had never been something I’ve needed to know.

Particularly, I didn’t know that “baseball season” actually means “every season of the year not called ‘winter,’ and sometimes winter too.” I understand that baseball is extremely popular, but I want it to go away. Specifically, I want baseball fans to go away. You have to be willing to accept a certain level of inconvenience when you decide to live near a baseball stadium, but the fans of the Baltimore Orioles and their opponents have overstayed their welcome in the area immediately surrounding me wherever I am. A 10-minute commute home from work becomes a 45-minute commute every time there’s a 7 pm game at Camden Yards, and while I was more than happy to accept that in exchange for the excitement of a big event happening right in my own backyard, now it’s just become a gigantic pain in my ass.

Football is a sport about strength, stamina and strategy. Once a week, for three months, football teams give it their all for three grueling hours. Baseball players stand around and cause traffic jams while playing catch for nine months. Go away.

foosball is for no brained pussies. Baseball is actually a skilled sport played on pure athleticism, smarts and finesse.

Plus, there is way more hot baseball players than foosball players.

Hockey on the other hand, now that’s some annoying shit right there.

No, no, no, not on this blog. I’m just going to quote George Carlin on this one:

In football the object is for the quarterback, also known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his receivers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy’s defensive line.

In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! — I hope I’ll be safe at home!

My sentiments exactly on baseball. Personally I can’t stand watching the game unless I’m involved in the physical aspect of it. I’m not sure if I would consider myself a true Yankee fan, cause the only time I tune in to root for them, is either in the playoffs or finals. Who can stand watching all the season games….lol?

Baseball is a sport in which two guys play catch and the rest stand around and scratch their balls. Where is the athleticism, smarts and finesse in that?

Matt, you are right about football. Man I miss it since moving to Australia.

Baseball and football both try my patience, not enough action in either one. Now competitive badminton, that is one heck of a sport. Skill, reflexes, superb physical conditioning, these are just a few of the qualities required for a top notch badminton player. Plus the wear short shorts while playing, which makes it even harder.

    See how effective I am?

Actually, while the logistical nightmares regarding the Orioles are particularly annoying, the entire sport is grating on my nerves. They’re even talking about it on NPR. After 162 games, it is absolutely beyond me how anyone could possibly still be interested in the sport.

And we get to do it all again next spring. Shoot me.

Right. Because, my God, I had no idea that baseball was played at Camden Yards.

Baseball is overrated. American football is overrated but is better than baseball. European football is a true sport that actually requires brains and athleticism.

Just to add to my above comment, as an American I never understood the fascination of the two American sports. I can watch football and baseball sometimes, but other than that I’m bored unless I’m actually participating in them. You may think that I’m horrible at sports, but I’m actually athletic.

I don’t think you are horrible at sports. You just don’t know a lot if you think that European football takes any more brains and athleticism than any other sport. All sports require a great amount of brains and athleticism. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I think any sport requires brains and athleticism.

Have your say
